The 2022 BCS70 birthday card features a specially commissioned painting of the Forest of Bowland by local artist Daniel Sharples. Daniel’s painting is entitled ‘The Trough’ and is a scene from Langden Brook, Lancashire. The birthday card is to mark the creation of the BCS70 woodland, in Bleasdale; a tribute to BCS70 members and to mark 50 years of the study.
In April 2022 we gave study members an opportunity to enter a giveaway draw to receive one of 52 limited edition prints of the painting. Thank you to everyone who entered the giveaway, we were delighted with the interest in the project. Lucky recipients were selected at random and notified in late May 2022. The prints were sent out in June.
Born in 1988, Daniel Roy Sharples grew up in Preston. After training in Illustration at the University of Central Lancashire (UCLan) gaining a PGCE in Applied Art & Design at Edge Hill University, he went into education, teaching for four years in Hong Kong. He is now Head of Art & Design at a Lancashire secondary school, while also dedicating time to developing his own practice and presence as an emerging artist.
Daniel works primarily in oils, creating convincing yet idealised scenes. His subject matter is inspired by the places and people around him; from grimy inner cities to rural landscapes and all the people he meets along the way. Plein air painting (painting outdoors) is increasingly becoming his main passion, and he can regularly be spotted painting on the streets of Preston.
